Wong Hoy Cheong

Pameran Wong Hoy Cheong adalah paparan utama mengenai karya pelukis tersohor yang belum pernah dipertontonkan kepada khalayak. Karya beliau menjurus kepada kekuasaan dan pengaruh figura dalam seni kontemporari Malaysia. Wong Hoy Cheong (dilahirkan di Pulau Pinang pada 1960), telah meraih pelbagai pengiktirafan yang melangkaui sempadan kita kerana ketajaman, kecanggihan karya-karyanya dalam menjelajahi isu-isu seperti migrasi penduduk, perkauman, keadilan politik, peranan sejarah dan kedudukan pasca-kolonial.

Sekembalinya dari Amerika Syarikat lewat tahun 1980an setelah mendapat pendidikan  yang luas dalam bidang Kesusasteraan, Seni Halus dan Pendidikan, Hoy Cheong memulakan kerjaya artisnya dengan karya-karya yang lebih mengutamakan catan naratif, selain melibatkan diri dalam seni persembahan, video dan instalasi. Sebagai artis, guru, kurator dan pengkritik, Hoy Cheong banyak membantu menaikkan semula seni figura naratif, di samping menggalakkan kepelbagaian disiplin dan pendekatan berani terhadap isu-isu sosio-politik masa kini.

Hoy Choeng bertindak sebagai penterjemah utama kepada sejarah negara, sosial dan suasana politik serta hubungan kita dalam konteks sejagat. Bahkan beliau sering kali mencari jalan baru dalam mengetengahkan ilham mengenai identiti kita serta bagaimana kita melihat ke dalam diri kita.

Antara tahun 1995-1996, Hoy Cheong telah merekacipta satu tubuh epik lukisan arang (charcoal), objek dokumentari dan teks yang membawa tema 'Tentang Migrasi dan Pokok Getah' (Of Migrants and Rubber Trees). Karya ini dipamerkan di Pusat Kreatif Balai Seni Lukis Negara pada tahun 1996. Pameran berkenaan menonjolkan sejarah dan kedinamikan imigrasi/pendatang terhadap negara serta warisannya.

Sejak daripada itu, karya Hoy Cheong banyak menekankan ketertiban, penggunaan lukisan, instalasi, teks, persembahan dan video. Malah beliau pernah membentangkan karya yang menggunakan jubin pulpa yang diperbuat daripada mukasurat buku-buku sejarah Asia; mencipta gambaran identiti campuran dengan menggunakan kulit tumbuhan, memeta semula Bandar-bandar kolonial London dan Pulau Pinang, turut menghasilkan satu filem dokumentari mengenai empayar imaginasi pemerintahan Malaysia yang menjangkaui sehingga ke benua Eropah. Beliau bukan sahaja seorang sejarahwan, malah gemar berfantasi dan juga ahli pertukangan mahir yang terbilang.

Pameran ini pada asalnya bermula sebagai pemaparan karya seninya sejak 1994, iaitu satu projek yang dianjurkan oleh OVA (Organisation for the Visual Arts, UK) atau Organisasi Seni Visual, UK dengan sokongan Majlis Kesenian England (Arts Council of England), pada mana tugas-tugas kuratorial telah disempurnakan oleh Sunil Gupta. Pameran ini kemudian telah dibawa secara bergerak ke beberapa lokasi di sekitar UK termasuk Galeri Bluecoat (Bluecoat Gallery) di Liverpool, Galeri John Hansard (Gallery John Hansard) di Southhampton dan Galeri Djanogly (Djanogly Gallery) di Nottingham. Manakala catalog pameran pula telah ditaja oleh majalah The Edge.

Kini pameran tersebut semakin diperluaskan bagi menambah karya-karya yang dicipta kemudia, antara lain karya yang berjudul RE: Looking, iaitu satu karya video yang diberi amanat oleh Schauspielhaus and Theater Ohne Grenzen di Vienna sempena majlis sambutan Venice Biennale ke-50 pada Jun 2003, di mana karya ini telah dipersembahkan sebagai sebahagian daripada sebuah karya instalasi yang lebih besar.

Memandangkan kebanyakan karya dalam pameran ini belum pernah dipamerkan di mana-mana, pameran kali ini boleh dikatakan kali pertama karya-karya penting Hoy Cheong dipertontonkan kepada khalayak di negara ini. Pameran ini juga memberi peluang yang unik untuk karya-karya seni artis tersohor ini diterokai melalui skop yang lebih luas.

Pameran Wong Hoy Cheong disusun oleh Cik Beverly Yong sebagai curator jemputan.

Bersempena dengan pameran ini, Wong Hoy Cheong sendiri akan mengadakan BICARA SENI bersama-sama para penggemar seni bertempat di Galeri 3A, Balai Seni Lukis Negara pada 6 November 2004 (Sabtu), jam 2.30 petang.

WONG HOY CHEONG

The exhibition "Wong Hoy Cheong" is an unprecedented major review of this leading artist's work. A powerful and instrumental figure in contemporary Malaysian art, Wong Hoy Cheong (born Penang 1960) has gained wide recognition well beyond our borders for his trenchant and sophisticated art, exploring issues such as migration, ethnicity, political justice, the role of history and the post-colonial condition.

Coming back from extensive studies in Literature, Fine Art and Education in the United States in the late 1980s, Hoy Cheong began his artistic career primarily in narrative painting, but also worked with performance, video and installation art. As artist, teacher, curator and critic he helped to bring about a revival of narrative figurative art, while encouraging a multi-disciplined and bold approach to the socio-political issues of our times.

Hoy Cheong has above all been a key interpreter of our country's history, social and political make-up and the global context in which we operate, constantly finding new ways of expressing ideas about our identity and how we read ourselves.  

In 1995-1996, Hoy Choeng created an epic body of charcoal drawings, and documentary objects and text, "Of Migrants and Rubber Trees", exhibited at the Creative Centre of the National Art Gallery in 1996, which addressed the history and dynamic of immigration into this country, and its legacy.

Since then, his work has been interdisciplinary, making use of drawing, installation, text, performance and video. He has pulped Asian history books to make tiles for the people to step on, he has created hybrid identities out of plant skins, he has remapped the colonial cities of London and Penang, he has made a documentary film of Malaysia as the imagined ruler of an empire stretching across to Europe. He is fantasist, historian and master craftsman.

The exhibition began as a review of his work since 1994, organised by OVA (Organisation for the Visual Arts, UK), supported by the Arts Council of England, and curated by Sunil Gupta touring venues in the UK, including Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, and Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham. The catalogue to the exhibition was sponsored by The Edge magazine.

The exhibition has now been expanded to include further works, most notably RE: Looking, a new video work originally commissioned by the Schauspielhaus and Theater Ohne Grenzen in Vienna, shown at the 50th Venice Biennale in June 2003 as part of a larger installation.

Many of the works in this exhibition have not previously been exhibited in Malaysia, and this is the first time a significant body of Hoy Cheong's works will be shown together in this country, presenting an unique opportunity to consider the larger scope of his art.

The Wong Hoy Cheong exhibition is guest curated by Ms Beverly Yong.

In conjunction with the show, Wong Hoy Cheong himself will be conducting a FLOOR TALK on 6 November 2004 (Saturday), at 2.30 pm in Gallery 3A of the National Art Gallery. Admission is free and all are welcome!
