Official Opening Ceremony of Worlds 2005

The World Universities Debating Competition – commonly referred to as just the "Worlds" – is the largest debating competition in the world, bringing together over 800 people from close to 100 universities from more than 50 nations all over the globe.

This 2nd largest student event in the world (after the World Student Games) is now into its 25th year and for the first time, it is coming to Malaysia thanks to host Multimedia University and the support of Telekom and many other sponsors.

Kolam Design Workshop

"Kolam" refers to decorative artwork drawn on the floor in front of houses and deities in worship rooms. Most often finely ground rice flour is used to make these drawings on moist ground previously sprinkled with water. Coloration of the artwork with colour powders adds additional charm. As Deepavali approaches, join our experienced programme leaders and discover the joy of this time old cultural tradition of South Indian families going back many, many generations.

Tradition and Form: Swedish fin-de-siècle Landscape Paintings
and Contemporary Furniture Designs

This talk, presented by Dr Göran Christenson, Director of the distinguished Malmö Art Museum of Sweden, offers a rare examination of two significant dimensions of Swedish art: the vital art of early 20th century southern Sweden landscape paintings, and the experience of mid-century Swedish furniture designs. Participants will be guided through a high-quality exhibition featuring the cream of works by late 19th century and early 20th century Swedish artists, and furniture creations by modern day designers who have cleverly reworked the legacy of 50s and 60s design wisdom, endowing it with fresh values that transcend the Scandinavian traditions.

Floor Talk

New Route of Cuban Art

Although still little known, Cuban art is a fast-rising force in this part of the world. With an interesting mix of black, white and Indian races, Cuban culture's vibrancy and vitality is alive in its arts. Cuban artists imaginatively stretch their limited resources to produce a range of interpretive modern and postmodern works. An expert on art history, Mrs Ercilia Argüelles Miret of the Havana City-based Cuban Arts and Crafts Foundation will present a one-hour public lecture on the skills and inventiveness of Cuban artists. The lecture will followed by a tour of the Cuban Contemporary Arts Exhibition at Gallery 2B, where Ercilia will guide you through the collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, engraving, art-video and digital art on view.

The lecture will end with complimentary refreshments.

CUBAN CONTEMPORARY ARTS EXHIBITION

 Open your eyes! Mrs Ercilia Argüelles Miret of the Havana City-based Cuban Arts and Crafts Foundation will guide you through paintings, drawings, sculptures, engraving, art-video and digital art showcasing the skills and inventiveness of Cuban artists. Isolated and removed from the ongoing critical discourse of Western art centres and without easy access to materials for successful art making, the artists of Cuba are producing some of the most innovative, expressive, contemporary art found worldwide. So much so, the nation is now known as one of the world's current hot spots for contemporary art. Some art lovers even refer to it as an artist's utopia – an independent environment filled with thriving intellectual artists in the midst of the economic and social challenges.

An expert on art history, Ercilia will explore how Cuban artists have represented the various social and aesthetic dimensions of Cuba today.

Sempena un wrapped: Pameran Rekaan Fesyen dan Tekstil Australia yang akan berlangsung mulai 12 Feb hingga 28 Mac 2004 di Galeri Reka, kurator pameran Meredith Rowe akan mengadakan CERAMAH KHAS di Balai Seni Lukis Negara pada 12 Feb 2004, pukul 5 petang. Selain tentang pameran un wrapped, Rowe juga akan menyentuh tentang berbagai pengaruh yang telah memberi kesan kepada rekaan fesyen dan industri tekstil Australia.
